Visitor Service Representative - Substitute

Reports to: Guest Services Supervisor/Box Office Manager
Job status: On Call (may include hours during weekends or evenings)
Hourly Wage: $8.50 - $9.25 per hour

Mission
The mission of Portland Children's Museum is to inspire imagination, creativity and the wonder of learning in children and adults by inviting moments of shared discovery.


Job Purpose
Responsible for greeting and orienting visitors, ensuring safety and security, attending to the care and comfort of visitors, maintaining the form and function of exhibits and props, and providing visitor information and support in a manner designed to ensure that the visitor's experience at the Museum is a positive one.

Job Results:

  • Orient guests to the Museum, answer questions, process payments for all earned revenue sources.
  • Promote and process museum memberships, and provide membership information to the public.
  • Provide up-to-date information on museum programs, events, and activities.
  • Establish and maintain an environment that provokes creative thinking and behavior amongst our visitors; encourages a mood in the museum that is playful, spontaneous and fun which focuses on exploration and experimentation
  • Facilitate individual creative play experiences and collaborations in the exhibits
  • Facilitate adult involvement
  • Remove obstacles to participation
  • Oversee exhibits and remove unsafe objects and broken props
  • Practice direct, professional communication
  • Comply with all exhibit policies and procedures
  • Maintain the admission desk, store and surrounding lobby: stock brochures, remove trash, set up and remove signage as needed
  • Ensure that all public spaces are safe and clean
  • Greet museum business visitors and contact appropriate staff to directly meet visitor
  • Answer phones as needed; refer callers appropriately
  • Follow cash handling procedures, accurately process and account for cash, check and credit card transactions
  • Provide an environment which is physically and emotionally safe for all ages and abilities

Job Qualifications/Specifications

  • Readiness to respond to emergency situations in a calm and comforting manner
  • Experience working in a fast paced, high traffic, public environment
  • Excellent customer service & communication skills
  • Experience with Point of Sale system & cash handling processes
  • Familiarity with child development and or experience working with young children a plus
  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks
  • Ability and willingness to comply with all aspects and issues outlined in the Portland Children’s Museum Employee Manual
